Spotlight on PIE experts: Martin Timmer

ECHA Specialist in Gifted Education, Specialist (High) giftedness

My name is Martin Timmer, 47 years old, living in the picturesque Achterveld.

Married to Kirsten, and father of three beautiful daughters Roos, Merel and Linde.

From our family situation, where giftedness plays an important role, my wife and I took on the challenge in 2018 to set up our practice Voorsprong in Talent. Our children are the motivation to be able to help as many (highly) gifted children from age 11 through our guidance programs, so that they can enter their future in joy and happiness, using their own unique talents.

In addition to my (part-time) work for Voorsprong in Talent, I have been working in secondary education since 1998, where I have set up and implemented a giftedness program at a secondary school in Nijkerk for the last 10 years. As a result of this work, I have also been associated with the working group of the BPS Academy, part of the Association of Talented Profile Schools in the Netherlands (BPS), for several years.

From January 1, 2022, I will be working at a Secondary Education Partnership in Gelderland, where I am co-responsible for the design and implementation of an intermediate school facility for gifted and gifted young people.

I am also a board member of the ECHA Network, the Dutch national association for specialists in giftedness. This is a volunteer position, which I am happy to fulfill.

What I have to offer......

The guidance I give is mainly based on the characteristics of (highly) gifted children in combination with (renewed) addressing executive and cognitive skills, mindset, and social-emotional challenges. Doubly special children (young people for whom other problems or challenges play a role in addition to (high) giftedness) are also very welcome.

I supervise children at school, but also at home such as children who have dropped out of our education system, for a shorter or longer period of time.

Through individual guidance, online or on location, I discover together with the child which dots are on the horizon to strive for and I provide tips, tools and handles to achieve these goals. Well-being always comes first, after which cognitive development can be worked on.

Within all my trajectories, the child is in control and I coach the child towards his/her goals. I can also give the right guidance to parents who get stuck in the upbringing of their (highly) gifted child, often in combination with the trajectory that the child is following.

Specifically for gifted children, the PIE Academy can be a very nice alternative, especially if they drop out from the regular home country education system, to achieve (educational) goals in a different, but above all, also pleasant way. This is one of the reasons that I make myself available for the PIE Academy as a counselor and specialist in giftedness.
